On-Site Shielding Effectiveness
Shielding Effectiveness Measurement Services
EMC Hire has the skills and experience to test shielding effectiveness on chambers or equipment enclosure of all sizes between the frequencies of 20 Hz and 40 GHz.
Shielding effectiveness (SE) measurements are performed to verify that a chamber or enclosure functions as a "Faraday cage".

Why Perform Shielding Effectiveness Measurements?
The primary reasons for performing shielding effectiveness (SE) measurements include:
Exclusion of External Interference
High SE ensures that ambient signals (e.g., local Wi-Fi, radio, or mobile phone signals) do not enter the chamber and corrupt the sensitive measurements of the device under test (DUT).
Containment of Internal Emissions
SE measurements confirm that high-level RF signals generated inside the chamber during immunity testing do not leak out and interfere with external equipment or pose safety risks to personnel.
Standard Compliance
Validation is required to meet specific international and military standards (e.g., IEEE 299, EN 50147-1, or MIL-STD-285), which mandate minimum shielding performance for a lab to be accredited.
Security and Data Protection
In defence and secure facilities, SE testing prevents electromagnetic eavesdropping by ensuring sensitive data signals cannot be intercepted from outside the walls.
Identifying Physical Defects
Testing helps locate "leaks" in the shield caused by poorly sealed doors, aging gaskets, or faulty penetration panels, allowing for targeted maintenance.
Measurement Logic
The process typically involves comparing the signal strength received between two antennas in "free space" (reference) against the strength received when the shield is placed between them. The result is expressed in decibels (dB); a higher value indicates more effective shielding.
