Real-World EMC Testing & Consultancy in Practice
Delivered by EMC Hire in collaboration with WEMEC Ltd, these projects demonstrate practical, standards-based EMC solutions across heavy machinery and rail infrastructure.
Case Study 1
EMC Testing & NSA Validation for Thwaites Dumpers
On site EMC assessment, ISO 13766 testing, and EV charging EMC evaluation delivered by EMC Hire and WEMEC Ltd
Thwaites, a leading manufacturer of site dumpers, partnered with EMC Hire and our technical collaborators at WEMEC Ltd to undertake a comprehensive programme of on site EMC testing, NSA validation, and electromagnetic performance assessment.
The project covered both conventional diesel dumpers and a new electric powered model, ensuring each vehicle met the electromagnetic requirements necessary for safe, reliable operation in demanding construction environments.

Project Overview
As construction machinery incorporates more electronics — and as electric powertrains introduce new EMC considerations — manufacturers must ensure their vehicles operate safely within complex electromagnetic environments.
Thwaites required a practical, on site EMC solution that allowed them to test multiple dumpers directly on their own test track, avoiding the cost and disruption of transporting heavy vehicles to an external facility.
Our Approach
- Identification of a suitable test area on the Thwaites test track
- NSA (Normalized Site Attenuation) assessment to validate the site
- EMC testing of multiple dumpers against ISO 13766
- RF immunity testing using BCI below 1 GHz and near field antennas above 1 GHz
- Assessment of an electric powered dumper against ISO 13766, UNECE Regulation 10, and EN 61000
Testing Scope
A detailed NSA assessment confirmed compliance with CISPR 16 OATS requirements. Dumpers were tested against ISO 13766 including radiated emissions, conducted immunity, and RF immunity across the full frequency spectrum.
Additional testing ensured the electric dumper met EN 61000 charging EMC requirements.
Outcome
Thwaites gained a validated on site EMC test environment and full electromagnetic performance visibility, enabling faster development, reduced reliance on external labs, and accelerated compliance.
Why EMC Hire?
- Flexible on site EMC capability
- Standards based testing for diesel and electric vehicles
- NSA validation for customer test tracks
- Cost effective, low disruption testing solutions
Case Study 2
EMC & EMF De Risking for the Coventry Very Light Railway (CVLR)
On site EMC consultancy, RF surveys, and EMF safety testing delivered by EMC Hire and WEMEC
Coventry City Council completed a major milestone for the Coventry Very Light Railway demonstrator with EMC Hire and WEMEC delivering targeted EMC consultancy, RF surveying, and EMF safety testing.

Project Overview
The objective was a focused EMC and EMF de-risking programme to ensure safe public operation, addressing both interference risks and human exposure to electromagnetic fields.
Our Approach
- RF survey of the demonstration site
- EMC testing of vehicle systems
- EMF measurements for safety validation
Testing Scope
- Radiated emissions
- Bulk Current Injection (BCI)
- Immunity to mobile transmitters
- EMF measurements
RF surveys informed real-world test levels. Critical systems were reviewed, ensuring safe operation including manual braking under fault conditions.
Outcome
The programme enabled safe public demonstrations and supported the project safety case with robust EMC and EMF data.
“EMC Hire and WEMEC were highly professional... offering a pragmatic solution delivered flexibly and with the utmost professionalism.”
Angus Brummitt Brown, Senior Project Manager, CVLR
